Image Ad

Elizabeth Warren ran for US Senate for the state of Massachusetts in 2012. Being a woman Warren was able to put a "motherly" affect on her campaign ads, which is what she did in her first video ad of the election. Warren introduces herself, her background of where she came from, what she believes in, explains what experience she has dealing with the government and stands up for herself. Warren understands that running for office there will be campaign ads against her but rather than shying away, she addresses those ads before they even happen and allow voters to know who she is from her own mouth. This ad is an Image Ad, Warren is giving voters a chance to see who she is upfront, she's isn't diving in straight to the issues but rather she is explaining who she is as a person, allowing herself to be heard for her morals, thoughts, and opinions, and allowing the viewers to see her as a person not just a candidate. Warren's tone is soft and gentle and speaks about being a mother and a wife, but also touches base with her experience of working against Wall Street, she's making her image a relatable figure to both women and men throughout this ad.

Issue and Image Ad

The opening of this ad is President Obama speaking of all positive traits of Elizabeth Warren, where she comes from, what she stands for, and what she has already accomplished. With using President Obama as an aid in this campaign Warren is setting herself up for an image ad but at the end Warren addresses taking on the big guys and Wall Street, therefore relating to an issue ad as well. With the experienced background she already attains this ad just helped Warren gain more creditability, and with her soft speaking tone Warren is also making sure her image is still that of a "motherly" figure.

Issue Ad

In this last ad Elizabeth is addressing the issues that are occurring in America's work force. Warren doesn't candy coat but rather is upfront with the issues, and that as America we need to rebuild, we need to take care of ourselves, not depend on other countries. Warren is addressing America as a whole, not seeking or blaming individuals are groups but making all Americans feel as though we can be apart of the change all while still being soft tone speaking and getting her point of issues across. Warren focuses dramatically on "Rebuilding America" and with her images of construction workers, bridges, and buildings, she's implying that it starts from the ground up.

All of Warren's ads were all well done, and she stayed on course of keeping the gender role apart of her campaign, she never came off as harsh but she never came off as a push over, which for females in politics is a hard line to walk and with the campaign in 2012 Warren was able to walk that line, considering she did win and has made a huge impact on several issues that she addressed during her campaign ads.

  1. Do you think if she was to run for president that she would consider doing attack ads on her opponents?

  2. I noticed that you talked a lot about Warren's motherly tone of voice and image. With that being stated, do you think her being seen as a motherly figure in her potential campaign ads for 2016, will benefit her or work against her, and why?

  3. From all of this I don't see her doing any attack ads either. I'm curious like Rachel, do you think she would use any?

  4. Ms. Warren doesn't put out "Attack Ads" that's not her style, she rather keep her ads to the issues, to what voters care about, not putting another person down, and honestly I think more politicans should have that same attitude. If she were to run for president I don't think any of her ads would be attacking, defense ads of course but not attacking. Her motherly tone is something that is important because if you've ever heard her give a speech she gives very rowdy and strong toned, which is great but in her ads she needs to find that balance, she doesn't want to be to much like Sarah Palin but not like Hillary Clinton, somewhere in the middle.
