Media, Pop Culture and Politics

Elizabeth Warren, Will she, won’t she?

Politics, late night comedy, Seth Meyers? Sounds like a perfect combination. Seth Meyer finally tackles the question of Elizabeth Warren and running for President in 2016, finally because as we all know nobody, nobody has yet to think to ask Ms. Warren if she’s going to run, the Senator from Massachusetts.

As we all know Elizabeth Warren has not declared to run for President in 2016 and has stated several times that she has no intentions or desires to run for president, but that does not stop support groups, writers, reporters, and citizens not to question if she’s going to run. Warren has been saying no to running for president since 2014 but the media will simply not take no for an answer.

I have chosen to use this clip from Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he uses a segment of his show titled “Will they or won’t they?” Meyers mocks the media for refusing to believe Warren that she will not run for president in 2016. Although this isn’t necessary a “negative opinion” if Warren does decided to run for president or is planning to run, then her going against her own words would mostly likely bring up judgment calls. Yes, people change their minds, politicians change their minds, but in this clip from Late Night with Seth Meyers, he gives several different interviews clips of Warren saying no to running for president and Meyers is mocking the media because they won’t give up on asking Warren if she’s going to run, there’s no doubt a dumbing down effect that is occurring during this segment, although it isn’t directly towards Elizabeth Warren she’s still associated with it.

I don’t believe that this image completely puts Warren into a bind, it’s making fun of a delicate situation but it doesn’t comprise Warren’s image to do so. It does make Warren seems playing hard to get, especially when Meyers plays a clip of Barack Obama saying he has no intentions of running for president in 2008 from an interview in 2006, it makes you as the audience ponder if Warren is really telling the truth, does she have zero intentions of running for president.

The only way that this clip could cause a “backfire” or “push back” of Warren’s image is if it is used out of context, or an opponent uses it to their advantage saying Elizabeth is not even confident in herself to run for president, then why should we as a nation believe she has what it takes to run for president.

In all the interview clips of Warren during Meyer’s segment, she is very personable, honest, and keeps her image of being powerful women with softer edges. The segment from Meyer’s show is a fun, harmless way of poking fun at the media, and the segment gave Warren free air time, getting her name out at a national level, and allowed citizens to see her in a different light, rather than just the political realm.

  1. I love the video you chose! Im doing Warren too so I find it funny that she is so point blank about running but there is such a controversy about it! Great piece! I do think that this was good publicity for Warren!

  2. Since Warren has explicitly stated she does not plan on running in 2016, if she eventually decides to run and contradicts what she has previously said to the public, how do you think that will have an influence on her chances and more importantly how she is viewed by the voters?

  3. Sarah, I just loved it because it gave me a chance to lighten the mood a little on my blog, plus Seth is funny so win win! Morgan, if Warren does come out and say she is going to run, I think something dramatic would have had to happen, making her change her mind at the last minute (so to speak). I for sure see how that would look to unsure voters but if you've ever listen to Ms. Warren she would explain in detail of why the change.
